Radar Derived Subglacial Properties and Landforms Beneath Rutford Ice Stream, West Antarctica

چکیده
Basal properties beneath ice streams and glaciers are known to be a control for flow dynamics, hence knowledge of them is crucial predicting sea level due changes in glacial dynamics. properties, processes topography also drive the formation subglacial landforms. Bed Rutford Ice Stream (West Antarctica) have previously been described using seismic acoustic impedance measurements at sparse spatial coverage. Here, we derive bed 15 × 17 km grid surface radar data with coverage sampling much higher than previous studies. reflection amplitudes were calibrated sediment porosities (ranging from 0.4–0.5) derived impedance. We find spatially variable, consisting low porosity material some areas soft other areas. Comparison imply consolidated or sedimentary rock. Mega-scale lineations (MSGLs) ubiquitous on consist soft, high porosity, probably deforming sediment, consistent interpretations MSGLs. MSGLs reflectivity their crest, interpreted as water bodies overlying whereas trough around upstream end landforms material. Integrating these different observations, place constraints possible explanations occurrence crest

Radar surveys of the Rutford Ice Stream onset zone, West Antarctica: indications of flow (in)stability?
We present 1 and 100MHz ground-based radar data from the onset region of Rutford Ice Stream, West Antarctica, which indicate the form and internal structure of isochrones. In the flowparallel lines, modelled isochrone patterns reproduce the gross pattern of the imaged near-surface layers, assuming steady-state flow velocity from GPS records and the current accumulation rate for the last 200 yea...
متن کاملSeismic observations of transient subglacial water-flow beneath MacAyeal Ice Stream, West Antarctica
[1] New seismic observations of harmonic tremors beneath MacAyeal Ice Stream, West Antarctica are reported. Each of the two tremor events that we recorded during a six week period had sustained arrival of 3 Hz energy for approximately 10 minutes. During that time the source location migrated a few kilometers. The harmonic nature of the tremors is interpreted as the result of resonance in subgla...
متن کاملConnected subglacial lake drainage beneath Thwaites Glacier, West Antarctica
We present conventional and swath altimetry data from Cryosat-2 revealing a system of subglacial lakes that drained between June 2013 and January 2014 under the central part of Thwaites Glacier, West Antarctica. Much of the 10 drainage happened in less than six months, with an apparent connection between three lakes spanning more than 130 km. Hydropotential analysis of the glacier bed shows a l...
متن کاملRapid subglacial erosion beneath Pine Island Glacier, West Antarctica
[1] We present measurements of ice thickness, gravimetry and surface elevation on Pine Island Glacier, West Antarctica, separated by a period of 49 years. At one station, on the main trunk of the glacier we measured a surface elevation lowering with no significant change in ice thickness. We interpret these as indicating subglacial erosion of 31.8 13.4 m at this location, at a mean rate over th...
متن کاملSubglacial controls on the flow of Institute Ice Stream, West Antarctica
The Institute Ice Stream (IIS) rests on a reverse-sloping bed, extending >150 km upstream into the ∼1.8 km deep Robin Subglacial Basin, placing it at the threshold of marine ice-sheet instability. Understanding IIS vulnerability has focused on the effect of grounding-line melting, which is forecast to increase significantly this century. Changes to ice-flow dynamics are also important to IIS st...
